A series doesn’t have to be a large body of work. Sometimes it’s seven frames and one really interesting experience. A few years ago, I got back into film photography and started ordering rolls from abroad — different makers, different characters, different specifications. Some are old friends; others are still a blank slate.
My first attempt with Rollei Blackbird (ISO 64) didn’t go well, so I put it away at the back of a drawer. Or rather, in the fridge.
The other day, the sun finally came out, and I decided to give it a second chance. A colleague at fotolab.ru suggested pushing the film one stop as an experiment. As we know, that increases contrast and grain. The tonal gradation turned out beautifully — I want to see it in a print. No blocked-up shadows, just a subtle play of light.
For someone like me, used to shooting at high ISO, this felt very unfamiliar. That made the result all the more rewarding — it exceeded every expectation.
If you find a roll for sale, don’t hesitate. This film feels timeless.
